EMDR for Single-Incident Trauma

When something that happened still
feels present

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing)

is an evidence-based therapy that can help the brain process distressing experiences that continue to feel upsetting, even when the event happened some time ago.

I offer EMDR specifically for single-incident trauma — a one-off event that has had a lasting emotional impact. This may include experiences such as a road traffic accident, medical procedure, assault, workplace incident, sudden loss, or another unexpected and distressing event.

Sometimes, after a traumatic experience, the memory can feel as though it is still happening in the present. You may notice strong emotions, physical sensations, upsetting images, or reactions to reminders of what happened. EMDR aims to help the brain reprocess the memory so it feels more like something that happened in the past, rather than something you are still experiencing now.

EMDR uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, gentle tapping or sounds) within a structured and supportive therapeutic process. You remain in control throughout, and we work at a pace that feels safe for you. You do not need to go into every detail of the event for EMDR to be helpful.

EMDR may support you with:

  • Flashbacks or unwanted memories

  • Distressing images or reminders of the event

  • Strong emotional or physical reactions

  • Anxiety or fear linked to what happened

  • Avoidance of situations or reminders

  • Sleep difficulties following a traumatic experience

  • Feeling unable to move forward after a single distressing event

Before beginning EMDR, we will spend time understanding your experiences, preparing coping strategies, and ensuring this approach feels appropriate for your needs.

My focus is always on creating a calm, compassionate space where you feel supported, understood and able to work through your experience at your own pace.
